Elbow, Wrist & Hand Pain Treatment in Lake Forest

You have started opening jars with the other hand, and at no point did you actually decide to do that.

01What Causes It

What causes elbow, wrist, and hand pain?

Almost everything in this region falls into one of three groups, and telling them apart matters more than the label you arrive with. Tendon problems hurt in one small spot, get worse with gripping or lifting, and ease once you stop. Nerve problems tingle, buzz or go numb, follow a map down the arm into particular fingers, and often wake you at night. Joint problems feel stiff, look a little swollen, and are worst when you first start moving. Your therapist works out which of the three you are dealing with before anything else, because the treatments barely overlap.

Commonly called tennis elbow, and mostly suffered by people who have never held a racquet. The tendons that lift your wrist anchor into a small bony point on the outside of the elbow, and when demand outgrows what they can take, that point becomes exquisitely sore on gripping, pouring or shaking hands. The detail that matters: this is usually a tendon that has lost capacity rather than one that is inflamed, which is why months of rest disappoint. Tendon responds to graded load.

The mirror image, often called golfer's elbow, felt on the inner side and provoked by gripping, twisting and pulling. Golfers get it, but so do people who lift toddlers, swing hammers or type all day with the wrist held up. It behaves like its neighbour across the elbow and is treated the same way, with load rebuilt in the positions that currently hurt.

The median nerve runs through a narrow tunnel at the front of the wrist. When that tunnel gets tight, you get numbness or pins and needles in the thumb, index and middle fingers, often worst at night and relieved by hanging the hand out of bed and shaking it. Early on this responds well to nerve glides, wrist positioning and changing what compresses it. Persistent numbness or thinning at the base of the thumb should be seen by a physician too.

This one is missed constantly, because people assume any hand tingling is carpal tunnel. The ulnar nerve wraps around the inside of the elbow, the spot you call your funny bone, and it gets squeezed when the elbow is held bent for long stretches: a phone against your ear, an arm folded under a pillow all night. The tell is tingling in the little finger and half the ring finger.

Two problems live in this small area. The tendons along the thumb side of the wrist get irritated by repeated lifting with the thumb out, which is why new parents get it so often. And the joint at the base of the thumb wears, showing up as pain turning keys and opening jars. Both are treated by taking load off the aggravating position, then rebuilding pinch in a way the joint tolerates.

None of the above happens in isolation. A keyboard set too high, a mouse reached for all day, a tool needing too much grip, a shoulder that stopped contributing: these decide how much load the small stuff absorbs. It is why we look at your neck and shoulder even when the pain is in your hand.

02How PT Helps

How physical therapy in Lake Forest helps.

Each of the three groups gets treated on its own terms. A tendon does not get better because you left it alone. It gets better because you gave it work it could handle, in small increments, in the position that hurts, which is why the exercises look almost too easy at first and will not stay that way. A compressed nerve wants room and movement: a change to the position squeezing it, gentle gliding so it slides freely again, and honesty about the fact that numbness takes its time. A worn joint wants load it can tolerate and a grip strategy that stops asking the sore part to pinch. Alongside that, hands on work settles the forearm muscles pulling on the sore anchor point, and we go through your desk, tools and sport rather than telling you to stop. Illinois is a direct access state, so most people start without a physician referral, and we check your benefits beforehand so the cost is not a surprise. Your therapist evaluates you, treats you personally, and re-tests your grip so progress is something you can see.

03What To Expect

What to expect from your recovery.

01

Sorting tendon from nerve from joint

We test grip, we press on the specific spots that would confirm a tendon, we run the nerve tests, and we check the wrist, elbow, shoulder and neck as one chain. Then we take the history of your work, your tools and your sport. You leave knowing which of the three you have and what the plan is aimed at.

02

Take the irritation down, start the load

Hands on work and soft tissue release settle the forearm and the sore anchor point, and we change the two or three things in your day that are keeping it stirred up. Loading starts almost immediately, at a level that leaves you no worse the next morning, because that is what rebuilds a tendon rather than simply calming it.

03

Get grip back, and keep it

The last phase is capacity: grip, pinch, carrying, and the specific movement that broke it in the first place, loaded until it is stronger than the demand you place on it. We re-test the grip and the provoking positions from your first visit, and you leave with a short maintenance routine and a workstation that is not working against you.
