01What It Is

What is assisted stretching?

Assisted stretching is stretching with somebody else doing the holding, the positioning and the timing. That sounds like a small difference and it is not. On your own, you can only take a muscle as far as your own balance and grip allow, and both of those give out long before the tissue does. With trained hands supporting the limb, a joint can be taken to a true end range safely, held there long enough for the tissue to answer, and angled to catch the exact fibers you never find on the living room floor. We work through three methods. Passive stretching means you relax completely while we move the limb and hold the position for you. PNF, or proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation, uses a short contraction against resistance immediately before the stretch, which briefly persuades the nervous system to allow more range. Active-assisted stretching has you move into the position under your own power while we guide and support the limb.

That third method is there for a specific reason: range you cannot control is not much use to you. Flexibility that only exists when someone else is holding your leg tends to disappear the moment you need it on a stair or a bike or a slippery sidewalk. Assisted stretching goes after muscle and fascial tension directly, which is why it changes posture and everyday comfort rather than only how far you reach on a test. Most people notice it immediately. Looser, lighter, moving more freely by the time they get off the table on the very first visit, with the longer changes coming from doing it regularly rather than once.

02Who It's For

Who it's for.

Stiffness rarely arrives as an event. It accumulates, you adapt, and one day the shelf is higher than it used to be. These are the people who book it.

01

Tight in the same places, year after year

Hips that will not open, shoulders that will not go overhead, a spine that only rotates one way, legs that feel short by Friday. Stretching at home has not touched it, usually because you cannot get the angle or hold it long enough to matter.

02

Training, overusing, or coming back from surgery

Strains, sprains and repetitive-use tension from sport or work leave tissue guarded and short. So does an orthopedic procedure. Guided stretching restores range in those areas without asking you to force anything yourself.

03

Chronic tightness, or mobility that is slipping

Low back pain, neck stiffness and conditions like fibromyalgia keep tissue braced, and mobility naturally narrows with age if nothing pushes back. Regular assisted work is a way of pushing back on both.

03What To Expect

What to expect in a session in Lake Forest.

You stay clothed, you stay comfortable, and you are told what is happening before it happens. Here is the run of it.

01

The assessment

Your first visit starts with a full assessment: what you want more range for, how active you are, and what is bothering you right now. We check where the restriction genuinely sits, because a tight hamstring and a stiff hip can produce the same complaint and do not get the same treatment.

02

The stretching

You are positioned and supported while we take each area to its end range, hold, and move on. Passive, PNF and active-assisted work get mixed depending on the region and how your body answers. We watch your breathing and keep asking, because tissue that braces against you will not lengthen.

03

The plan

You leave knowing which areas were the real problem rather than the ones that merely felt tight, and what to keep doing between visits. Many people start with weekly sessions, then adjust the frequency based on their goals, activity level and how the body responds.

Good to know

Wear clothes you can move in, since we will be taking your hips, shoulders and spine through full range. You may feel a deep stretch, but the session is guided by your comfort and nothing is forced, so speak up the moment a stretch turns from strong to sharp. Afterward, drink water and use the new range with a walk or an easy session rather than sitting straight back down.
