Using mouthwash or early mouth rinsing is something that people all over the world have done in many different ways for thousands of years. In ancient Chinese medicine there are examples of mouth rinsing to help with oral health. Some additional early examples include during Greek and Roman periods. It is known the wealthy used vinegar, salt and alum (a double sulfur salt) for oral health. Native Americans also used mouth rinse made from plants.

The reason for mouthwash popularity it obvious…who doesn’t love a clean, fresh and healthy mouth? However, in our modern age there are so many choices for mouthwash we need to be very vigilant when selecting what we use in and on our bodies. The use of chemicals in today’s mouthwash formulas is something we should all try to avoid as they go directly into our bloodstream even if we are only swishing and spitting it out.

The most common ingredients found in mouthwash include Chlorhexidine, Alcohol, Hexetidine (oraldene), Methyl Salicylate, Benzalkonium chloride, Cetylphyridinium chloride, Methparaben. These often found ingredients should be avoided. There are literally 100’s of mouthwash brands on the market. Choose wisely.

I use Young Living Thieves products for my oral care.
